Tips for Nursing School: What to Expect and How to Succeed

Have you decided that your future lies in nursing? Congratulations! Working as a nurse can be personally and financially rewarding, and as the healthcare sector grows, the opportunities also increase.

The first step to getting there is nursing school. There is a lot of information to learn in nursing school, and staying on top of the workload can be challenging. Having a plan before you start can help you have a successful academic career. At Barton College, we strive to help our students get ahead. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of nursing school.

What to Expect in Nursing School

Nursing programs are challenging. They’re designed to prepare students to care for the health of patients, so they must be rigorous. The science, theory, and practical applications all require a dedication to academic excellence.

At Barton College, nursing programs include rigorous science classes, such as Anatomy and Physiology, Fundamentals of Organic and Biochemistry, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and Microbiology. Students pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing take courses including Theoretical Perspectives for Advanced Nursing, Health Care Policy and Ethics, and Advanced Nursing Leadership.

Clearly, these classes require work. Students also take part in internships to build their clinical experience. Staying on top of the workload is vital to ensure you get the most out of your classes with the least amount of stress possible.

Tips For Success From Barton College

When you’re able to keep up with your classes, it reduces your stress and helps you learn more. Here are some of our best tips to help you stay on top.

Set up space to succeed.

This includes literal space, such as a comfortable place to study. Having a dedicated area to work, complete with all the supplies you need, will make it easier to work efficiently.

It’s also a good idea to take a look at the obligations in your life and cut back wherever you can. Let your loved ones know that you need to focus on your studies and ask for their support.

Plan study “snacks.”

Focused study sessions are important, but you can also make real progress by working little review sessions into your day. Flip through flashcards just before bed, spend 10 minutes on an online quiz site as you wait in line, or review your notes over breakfast. You can tape lists or charts to your bathroom mirror to study as you brush your teeth. These small study sessions are a great way to reinforce everything you’re learning.

Plan time off.

Working hard without ever taking a break is a great way to burn out. To stay engaged and energized, it’s important to step away at regular intervals. Keep time in your schedule to exercise, get together with friends, and do things that bring you joy. It will help you tackle your schoolwork when you return to the task.
