Campus Counselor

Barton College is hiring for a full-time, 9-month Campus Counselor. This position exists to provide psychotherapy and psycho-educational programming to students in individual and group settings in order to enhance their emotional well-being, personal development, and academic success.

The Counselor, under the direction of the Executive Director of Student Health Services, also contributes to the general support, guidance, and achievement of the vision for the Lee Student Health Center.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Development, delivery, evaluation, and coordination of psycho-educational and developmental outreach programs and workshops for students, staff and faculty.
  • Provides counseling services to the general student population per Barton College Counseling Services Policy and Procedure Manual. 
  • Mental Health Crisis Consultation per Barton College Counseling Services Policy and Procedure Manual. 
  • Provision of culturally competent short-term individual, group, and couples therapy over a broad range of difficulties and diagnoses to a college student population. 
  • Case management including intake assessment, treatment planning, and community referrals as appropriate. 
  • Provides consultation to faculty, staff, students and parents on mental health issues and specific students (within the limits defined by confidentiality). 
  • Participation in Student Engagement activities pertinent to the well-being of students and the college community, including serving on college committees, attendance at new student orientation and scheduled divisional meetings, and participation in the annual divisional retreat (typically scheduled in May) 
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with public and private mental health agencies and provides community service referrals as needed. 
  • Maintains confidential student records. 
  • Participates in New Student Orientation (dates typically scheduled in May, June, and August) for all incoming freshmen, transfers and their parents.
  • Participates in campus professional development activities and associations and also maintains licensure and membership with professional organizations 
  • Serves as an active liaison between the College administration, faculty and the student and vice versa.
  • Writes and develops working reports when requested. 
  • Encourages students and staff to participate in college programs and student activities. 
  • Maintains continuous active membership and licensure with the state board. 
  • Participation in Behavioral Intervention Team

 

Desired Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in a counseling field and a LCSW, LMFT, or LPC credential. Continuous active membership and licensure with the NC state board and two years independent counseling experience. 
  • Demonstrated effective skills in providing mental health counseling with college-age, diverse individuals and counseling experience within an institution of higher learning is preferred. 
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills along with the ability to work collaboratively with others to provide programs and services to enhance student engagement and retention. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and familiarity with SimplePractice preferred. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing and verbal communication skills required.
