WILSON, N.C. — April 4, 2022 — The Barton College community is excited to celebrate “Days of Scholarship & Engagement” on campus during the week of April 4-8. The theme, “Beyond Barton: Life/Work Balance,” will cover myriad topics of interests.
The Barton campus community is invited to participate in Open Mic and Movie Night with the Barton English Club, led by student hosts Kendall Felton and Logan Roberson on Monday evening in the Hamlin Student Center Theater.
Tuesday morning opens with the Plenary Session in Hardy Alumni Hall at 9 a.m., featuring Barton alumnus Trey Scoggins, Class of 2021. Scoggins completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications and is currently enrolled in film school as he pursues a master’s degree.
Following the Plenary Session, the campus community will focus on morning presentation sessions in Hines Hall, featuring the scholarship of both Barton faculty and students.
Faculty presentations, beginning at 10:10 a.m., will include Michael Brantley’s “Privateer, Not Pirate”; Susan Fecho’s “Exploring Mokuhanga Woodcut Techniques”; Ashley Gardner and Sheri Browning’s “A DoSE of Online Learning Perceptions”; Rebecca Godwin’s “Body Politics: Pleasure and Transgression in ‘Chasing the North Star’”; Gerard Lange’s “Within These Borders: A Critical Look at Land ‘Ownership’”; and Nicole Sciortino’s “the Effects of Statin and LDL on Hepatic PCSK9 and A1AT Function.”

Dr. Avant will kick off the afternoon events in Hardy Alumni Hall with a 40-minute presentation on the new vision for scholarship at Barton, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
At 4:30 p.m., the Library Commons in Hackney Library will be the place to be as the campus community “Celebrates Authors” with book discussion, book signings, and refreshments. Meet with Dr. Morghan Bosch, Michael Brantley, Dr. Suleyman Ozeron, and Dr. Rod Werline.
And, at 6 p.m., plan to join Dr. Alan Lane and his travel class present “A Global Experience – Travels to Greece” in Moye Science Hall, room 111.
On Wednesday, the campus community is invited to attend the Allied Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Center Campus (Rain site is Kennedy Recreation and Intramural Center in Wilson Gymnasium).
Also, beginning at 11:30 a.m. will be “For Further Study: A Graduate Student Panel” (online) featuring Tehira Nash, Alessandro Gerbino, Taylor Everly, and Carson Molaro.
An afternoon Faculty Forum in the Georgia Brewer Campion Center for Academic Success, featuring Lydia Walker, will be held at 4 p.m.
At 6 p.m. in Moye Science Hall, room 111, Angie Walston will lead a panel discussion on “Experience Matters: Internship Best Practices & Success Stories.”
Thursday evening, Theatre at Barton will present “Student Produced Works and Spoken Word” in the Kennedy Family Theatre at Barton College at 7:30 p.m. This program will provide a stage for students, faculty, and staff at Barton College to share viewpoints of unique interests via stories, original poetry and songs, or other forms of communicating awareness. Advance reservations are required at www.barton.edu/theatre. Admission is free, but there will be limited seating available for the audience in the Kennedy Family Theatre. Social distancing will be observed, and face masks are encouraged but not required.
Works to be presented will include the plays “The Perfect Red” by Paolo Soto Hornbuckle (actors Evan Bradly, Alyssa Krasovich, and Jordan Peartree; directed by Luke Eason, Angel Clinton, and Morgan Tripp); and “The Southwest Terror” by Luke Eason (actors Zachery Rayburn, class of 2016, and Fletcher Duke; directed by Luke Eason). Poems to be presented will include “What is Art” by Sherida Suggs; “Netflix Show Once Told Me” by Xavier McCreary; “Loss of Breath” by Jordan Peartree; “The Closed Room Above the Stairs” by Caroline Leegins and performed by Jaimonnie Carter; “What Was It Caught Your Eye” by Jordan Peartree; “Hi, My Name Is” by Xavier McCreary; “The Dam That Broke” by Caroline Leegins, narrated by Morgan Tripp, and performed by Angel Clifton; and “I Do Not Own My Own Last Name” by Jordan Peartree. Jordan Peartree will also share the song “The Morning Light.”
Friday morning will conclude the week’s activities with “Above and Beyond: A Celebration of Excellence Awards Ceremony and Reception at the Aileen and Bill Parish Plaza at Howard Chapel, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
